“Scriptura vs Ecclesia”
SCRIPTURE PASSAGE: 2 Timothy 3:14-17
SPEAKER: Pastor Iain Davis
Sermon Notes:
Catholic Teaching:
- Scripture is an authority in the life of the believer, but not the only authority
- Sola Scriptura is not a biblical teaching
- Jesus and Paul do not insist on the disciples writing down their words, but to remember their oral tradition
- The Church possesses the authority to interpret what Scripture means properly
What we believe
- Scripture is our final authority in all matters of faith; human interpretation can be useful, but it is not authoritative.
- The Principles of Sola Scriptura are documented in Scripture itself and in the writings of the church fathers that Catholics would look to as possessing divine inspiration
- Sola Scriptura begins once the process of special revelation has ended, once there is a scripture to look back to.
- God has a purpose in giving us the Scriptures, so that we might be equipped for every good work.
