Future Glory

¹⁸ For I consider that the sufferings of this present time are not worth comparing with the glory that is to be revealed to us. ¹⁹ For the creation waits with eager longing for the revealing of the sons of God. ²⁰ For the creation was subjected to futility, not willingly, but because of him who subjected it, in hope ²¹ that the creation itself will be set free from its bondage to corruption and obtain the freedom of the glory of the children of God. ²² For we know that the whole creation has been groaning together in the pains of childbirth until now. ²³ And not only the creation, but we ourselves, who have the firstfruits of the Spirit, groan inwardly as we wait eagerly for adoption as sons, the redemption of our bodies. ²⁴ For in this hope we were saved. Now hope that is seen is not hope. For who hopes for what he sees? ²⁵ But if we hope for what we do not see, we wait for it with patience.

²⁶ Likewise the Spirit helps us in our weakness. For we do not know what to pray for as we ought, but the Spirit himself intercedes for us with groanings too deep for words. ²⁷ And he who searches hearts knows what is the mind of the Spirit, because the Spirit intercedes for the saints according to the will of God. ²⁸ And we know that for those who love God all things work together for good, for those who are called according to his purpose. ²⁹ For those whom he foreknew he also predestined to be conformed to the image of his Son, in order that he might be the firstborn among many brothers.³⁰ And those whom he predestined he also called, and those whom he called he also justified, and those whom he justified he also glorified.

REFLECTION

• In vv18-25, Paul used a bold metaphor to illustrate the sufferings in the world that is the pregnant woman’s labour pains, birth pangs. These are signs of an imminent and glorious birth – the “redemption of our bodies”. This is certainly a different way of understanding groans and suffering. Christians thus are able to realize that there is no comparison between the present hard time and the glorious future (v18). And they wait with eager longing (v19) and with patience (v25).
• How would this understanding help you better prepare to face the harsh situations in life at present time?
• In vv 26-30, when we pray, we are never “on our own”. The Spirit at all times is praying in and for us. Therefore, prayer involves not just God’s listening to us; more importantly, rather it is the Holy Spirit’s active intercessory presence in our lives.
• How do you pray? How can you experience the Holy Spirit’s active intercession for you? How would this encourage your intercession for other believers?

PRAYER

Lord, thank You for speaking to me once again today and reminding me that all things work together for the good of those who love God. You have spoken these words to me before, but I didn’t fully understand and even had doubts. Today, I realize that You don’t intend for everything to go smoothly for me and for me to enjoy the benefits of the world, like those who do not believe in You exchange greetings during the New Year holidays. Instead, You want me to see Your presence and guidance in everything I experience. Some things may be smooth, while others may be difficult, and at times I may even face hardships. But because of Your presence and because You have personally told me that You have overcome the world, I am filled with heavenly peace and hope in my heart. The benefits I receive from You are spiritual growth, living out Your holiness in this corrupt world. Lord, I deeply understand that my true benefits are not on this earth but in heaven. I firmly believe that You will lead me to Your eternal glory in the future. May the Holy Spirit continue to guide me, so that I may have an elevated perspective, unwavering faith, and patiently wait with a beautiful hope. Amen!
