CHAPTER 26 (ESV)

1 Then Job answered and said:…

7 He stretches out the north over the void
and hangs the earth on nothing.
8 He binds up the waters in his thick clouds,
and the cloud is not split open under them.
9 He covers the face of the full moon
and spreads over it his cloud.
10 He has inscribed a circle on the face of the waters
at the boundary between light and darkness.
11 The pillars of heaven tremble
and are astounded at his rebuke.
12 By his power he stilled the sea;
by his understanding he shattered Rahab.
13 By his wind the heavens were made fair;
his hand pierced the fleeing serpent.
14 Behold, these are but the outskirts of his ways,
and how small a whisper do we hear of him!
But the thunder of his power who can understand?”

REFLECTION:

A total of six chapters, from Chapter 26 to 31, Job interweaves the mystery and power of God with a beautiful poem of faith, becoming the longest speech in the Book of Job. At the beginning, he refuted the last irrelevant answer of Bildad (Chapter 25). Job then told Bildad and his friends that they could not know everything about God. Wisdom does not come from this life nor from man’s heart, but from God. Job later defended his integrity and faithful life, and he sought God in his life. While admitting he was imperfect, he insisted that his motives were pure. In Chapter 26, Job enthusiastically sang praises to God’s power. Today, when you look at God’s heavens, the work of His fingers, the moon and the stars, which He has set in place, is your heart filled with infinite wonder and awe?

PRAYER:

God! You are the Almighty God; Your ways are higher than my ways, and Your thoughts are higher than my thoughts. I acknowledge that I am an imperfect person, but You know that my heart’s desire to seek and draw near to You is pure. Whenever I gaze upon the heavens, the work of Your fingers, and the moon and the stars which You have set in place, my heart is filled with infinite awe and reverence. What is man that You are mindful of him? What is mankind that You care for them? May I praise and exalt Your great power every day.
