Deuteronomy 17 (ESV)

Laws Concerning Israel’s Kings

14 “When you come to the land that the Lord your God is giving you, and you possess it and dwell in it and then say, ‘I will set a king over me, like all the nations that are around me,’ 15 you may indeed set a king over you whom the Lord your God will choose. One from among your brothers you shall set as king over you. You may not put a foreigner over you, who is not your brother. 16 Only he must not acquire many horses for himself or cause the people to return to Egypt in order to acquire many horses, since the Lord has said to you, ‘You shall never return that way again.’ 17 And he shall not acquire many wives for himself, lest his heart turn away, nor shall he acquire for himself excessive silver and gold.

18 “And when he sits on the throne of his kingdom, he shall write for himself in a book a copy of this law, approved by the Levitical priests. 19 And it shall be with him, and he shall read in it all the days of his life, that he may learn to fear the Lord his God by keeping all the words of this law and these statutes, and doing them, 20 that his heart may not be lifted up above his brothers, and that he may not turn aside from the commandment, either to the right hand or to the left, so that he may continue long in his kingdom, he and his children, in Israel.

REFLECTION:

  • This passage records God’s warning to future kings of Israel against acquiring the trappings associated with wealth. This warning, however, did not deter David and later Solomon from acquiring great wealth.  Today we all know stories of contemporary leaders who take office with good intentions, but whose service is later compromised by money.  What is so seductive about money and what it can buy?  How do they keep us from living a life of simplicity?
  • Simplicity/Frugality: The inward reality of single-hearted focus upon God and His kingdom, which results in an outward lifestyle of modesty, openness, and unpretentiousness and which disciplines our hunger for status, glamour, and luxury.

PRAYER:

Dear heavenly Father, thank You for teaching me today about living a life of godliness and simplicity. I live in a wealthy country where my daily needs are more than met. Please give me a heart of godliness, to cherish and appreciate everything I have now, knowing that it all comes from Your blessings. Give me wisdom and humility to know how to handle abundance and poverty, because I brought nothing into this world, and I can take nothing out of it. I should be content with clothing and food. I want to remember those who are struggling and in need around me, and help them practically. If I encounter hardship and poverty in the future, please give me faith to rely on You for everything. Please remove pride from my heart, so I won’t be fixated on the power, wealth, and glory of the world, because all of these will pass like the dew on the grass. Please mould me to experience the richness of life, joy, and peace of the soul. This is true wealth. Amen!
